Scientists have discovered a naturally occurring soil fungus that could provide an environmentally friendly way to control the African armyworm, one of the most destructive pests affecting cereal crops. The pest attacks millet, sorghum, maize, and sugarcane, causing severe crop losses across Africa.

Unlike conventional chemical pesticides, the fungus specifically targets armyworm larvae, reducing the need for broad-spectrum chemicals that can harm beneficial insects and the environment. Researchers believe this biological control method could become an effective and sustainable tool for integrated pest management.

If further testing and field validation are successful, the discovery could help millet farmers protect their crops more sustainably, improve yields, and strengthen food security in regions vulnerable to recurring armyworm outbreaks.
