CSIR-CFTRI Launches New Secondary Millet Processing Facility in Mysuru

CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute (CSIR-CFTRI) in Mysuru has launched a new secondary millet processing facility, marking another step towards strengthening millet processing, value addition and food innovation. Supported through a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, the facility is expected to enhance technological capabilities for converting millets into value-added food products and encourage wider utilisation of these nutritious grains.

Secondary processing plays an important role in transforming cleaned and primary-processed millets into consumer-ready ingredients and food products. Modern processing infrastructure can support the development of millet-based flours, mixes, snacks and other innovative foods while improving consistency, convenience and product quality. Such facilities can also help bridge the gap between agricultural production and the growing market for processed millet foods.

The initiative is particularly significant as India continues to promote millets for their nutritional importance, climate resilience and potential contribution to sustainable agriculture. Scientific institutions such as CSIR-CFTRI have an important role in developing technologies that enable businesses and entrepreneurs to create commercially viable millet products while addressing challenges associated with processing, shelf life and consumer acceptance.

CSR-supported infrastructure can further strengthen collaboration between research institutions and industry. Access to advanced processing technologies and technical expertise may benefit entrepreneurs, food processors and other stakeholders interested in millet-based product development. Such partnerships can help translate laboratory research into practical solutions that can be adopted by the food industry.

The new facility in Mysuru also reinforces Karnataka's position within India's growing millet ecosystem. By combining scientific expertise, modern processing infrastructure and industry support, initiatives of this kind can contribute to expanding millet value chains and creating greater opportunities for value-added products.

As consumer interest in nutritious and sustainable foods continues to grow, improved millet-processing capabilities could support innovation and market expansion. The CSIR-CFTRI facility represents an important effort to connect research, technology and industry while encouraging millets to become a stronger part of India's modern food sector.
