Karnataka Health and Family Welfare Minister U.T. Khader's recent visit to the United States highlighted the growing importance of international cooperation in healthcare, nutrition, food safety, education, and agricultural innovation. During his visit, Minister Khader participated in several high-profile events that strengthened India–U.S. relations while showcasing Karnataka's leadership in public health and sustainable development. He was honored with the prestigious Global Civic Leadership Award at the 15th Annual American Multi-Ethnic Commission's Congressional Global Champions Gala in Illinois and was also recognized at a community reception hosted by Sikhs of America and Muslims of America in Columbia, Maryland. These recognitions reflect his commitment to inclusive governance, global collaboration, and community service.
Throughout his engagements, Minister Khader emphasized the important role of the Indian diaspora in strengthening ties between India and the United States. He encouraged greater collaboration between overseas Indians and communities in India through knowledge sharing in healthcare, education, technology, and innovation. According to the minister, stronger engagement with the global Indian community can help accelerate development initiatives, improve public services, and create long-term partnerships that benefit both nations. He also praised the unity displayed by diverse communities during his visit, highlighting the importance of harmony, cultural respect, and mutual cooperation.
A key focus of the visit was child nutrition and food safety. During his interaction with Purdue University's College of Agriculture, Minister Khader initiated the GSA–Purdue University National Children's Nutrition Collaborative with Anganwadi Centers. The initiative aims to promote healthier eating habits among children, improve food safety standards, and encourage evidence-based nutrition policies. By studying international best practices, Karnataka plans to strengthen its own food safety regulations and develop policies that improve public health, reduce malnutrition, and ensure better nutrition for future generations.
Minister Khader also delivered the keynote address at the eighth GSA India–USA Millets Partnership Roundtable held at the Consulate General of India in Chicago. As Karnataka is one of India's leading millet-producing states, he highlighted the nutritional, environmental, and economic benefits of millets. He stressed that millets are sustainable crops that support healthy lifestyles while contributing to climate-resilient agriculture. The minister reaffirmed Karnataka's commitment to promoting millet consumption globally and encouraged greater international cooperation to increase awareness of these traditional superfoods for the benefit of future generations.
Healthcare innovation remained another major theme during the visit. Minister Khader discussed Karnataka's efforts to improve emergency medical services through innovative transportation solutions, including cycle ambulances, bike ambulances, train ambulances, sea ambulances, and drone-supported air ambulance services. These initiatives aim to reduce emergency response times, especially in rural and remote areas, ensuring that patients receive timely medical care. He emphasized that rapid access to healthcare can significantly improve survival rates and save countless lives across the state.
During his visit to the Center for Social Change in Elkridge, Maryland, Minister Khader explored advanced autism care and rehabilitation services. Impressed by the center's inclusive approach, he expressed interest in developing similar facilities and collaborative programs in Karnataka. He praised the organization's efforts in supporting individuals with autism and reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure that promotes dignity, accessibility, and equal opportunities for every citizen.
Minister Khader concluded his visit by encouraging young leaders and the global Indian community to embrace inclusive leadership, humanity, patience, and cultural harmony. He emphasized that true national progress should be measured not only by economic growth but also by diversity, compassion, and social unity. His visit reinforced Karnataka's vision of advancing healthcare innovation, food safety, child nutrition, millet promotion, and stronger India–U.S. partnerships while building a healthier and more sustainable future for generations to come.
