The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) has begun consultations with industry stakeholders to design the next phase of incentive schemes aimed at strengthening India's food processing sector. The discussions focused on creating a future-ready policy framework that promotes investment, innovation, exports, employment, and value addition across agricultural supply chains.
During the consultation, the ministry highlighted the achievements of the Production Linked Incentive Scheme for the Food Processing Industry (PLISFPI). Among its key successes was the rapid expansion of millet-based processed foods, with sales growing at a 104% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) and millet procurement increasing by 97% CAGR, reflecting rising consumer demand for nutritious, value-added millet products.
Industry representatives recommended a more flexible incentive structure that supports emerging food categories, including functional foods, nutraceuticals, plant-based proteins, and millet-based products. They also emphasized the need for greater investment in research, technology, innovation, export promotion, and stronger raw material supply chains.
The Ministry announced the formation of two working groups to address misconceptions about processed foods and develop long-term strategies for strengthening India's food processing ecosystem. The initiative aims to accelerate innovation, enhance global competitiveness, and position India as a leading food processing hub while creating greater opportunities for farmers, MSMEs, and agri-based industries
