Researchers from JNTUA College of Engineering, Anantapur, and CSIR–Indian Institute of Chemical Technology have developed a new hybrid composite material by combining foxtail millet husk and rice straw with polypropylene, creating a lightweight and environmentally friendly material suitable for electric vehicle components.

The study investigated chemical treatments using sodium hydroxide and tannic acid to improve the bonding between natural fibres and the polymer matrix. These treatments enhanced fibre surface characteristics, resulting in stronger adhesion and improved distribution of fibres throughout the composite material.

Mechanical testing showed significant improvements in tensile, flexural and impact strength compared with untreated natural fibre composites. The hybrid material also maintained good processing characteristics while providing greater durability and resistance, making it suitable for lightweight automotive applications where strength and reduced vehicle weight are essential.

The findings demonstrate how agricultural residues such as foxtail millet husk, which are often treated as waste, can be transformed into high-value industrial materials. This approach supports sustainable manufacturing, promotes circular economy practices, and creates new value-added opportunities for the millet sector beyond food applications.
