The Telangana government is planning to introduce jowar along with rice through the Public Distribution System (PDS) as part of efforts to improve nutrition and encourage healthier food habits. The initiative aims to increase the consumption of millets among ration beneficiaries while promoting crops that are more sustainable and climate-resilient. Officials stated that jowar procured through state agencies will be distributed through fair price shops across Telangana.

The government is also considering including jowar-based meals in welfare hostels, residential schools, and other public institutions. Nutrition experts believe that adding millets like jowar to regular diets can help improve overall health because they are rich in fibre, iron, and essential nutrients. The move is expected to create greater awareness about the benefits of traditional grains and encourage balanced eating habits.

Apart from improving public nutrition, the initiative is likely to support farmers by ensuring procurement of jowar and other crops at minimum support prices. The state government has planned procurement measures to protect farmers from low market prices and weak demand. Procurement centres are being set up in different districts to ensure farmers receive fair returns for their produce.

The proposed PDS reforms reflect Telangana’s growing focus on millet promotion, sustainable agriculture, and food security. By combining rice with nutritious grains such as jowar, the government hopes to support both consumer health and farmer welfare while encouraging a gradual shift towards more diversified and healthy diets.
