A new scientific study has highlighted the potential of iron- and zinc-biofortified pearl millet to improve children's gut health while helping address iron deficiency through a food-based approach. Researchers followed toddlers in Mumbai for nine months and compared those consuming biofortified pearl millet with children receiving conventional pearl millet.

The findings showed that the biofortified millet supported beneficial changes in the gut microbiome without causing the digestive disturbances frequently associated with iron supplements. Instead of disrupting the balance of gut bacteria, the nutrient-rich grain promoted microbial functions linked to improved gut health and overall well-being.

Iron deficiency remains one of the world's most widespread nutritional challenges, particularly among young children, where it can affect growth, immunity, and cognitive development. The researchers suggest that biofortified staple crops could provide a sustainable alternative to supplementation by delivering essential nutrients through everyday diets.

The study also demonstrates the broader potential of biofortified millets to contribute to improved nutrition, healthier gut microbiomes, and more resilient food systems, especially in communities where micronutrient deficiencies remain common.
