Dr. M.L. Jat, Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), recently recognised progressive farmer Shri K. Chikkana at the ICAR–Indian Institute of Millets Research (IIMR) in Hyderabad for his notable contribution to millet cultivation. The farmer from Karnataka’s Chitradurga district was honoured for successfully adopting improved finger millet farming techniques and demonstrating the benefits of climate-resilient agriculture.

Despite his age, Shri Chikkana modernised his farming practices by cultivating improved millet varieties with guidance from ICAR-IIMR scientists and local farmer organisations. By following scientific cultivation methods, balanced nutrient management, and sustainable farming practices, he was able to increase crop productivity and improve farm income. His integrated farming approach also supported better fodder availability for livestock, making the system more sustainable.

During the programme, Dr. Jat highlighted the importance of millets in strengthening food security, improving nutrition, and supporting climate-smart agriculture. He stressed that scientific support, quality seeds, and farmer awareness can help increase millet production while improving rural livelihoods. The event also showcased how traditional crops like finger millet can provide sustainable income opportunities for farmers in changing climatic conditions.

Shri Chikkana thanked the scientists and support agencies that guided him in adopting improved millet cultivation practices. His success story is encouraging many other farmers to explore modern and sustainable millet farming methods as demand for nutritious and climate-resilient crops continues to rise.
