The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) has received the Best Research Institution award at the 2026 Makueni Agricultural and Trade Fair in Kenya. The recognition acknowledges the institute's work in developing climate-resilient farming solutions and supporting smallholder farmers across East Africa's drylands through research, innovation and partnerships.

At the exhibition, ICRISAT showcased improved varieties of sorghum, pearl millet, finger millet, foxtail millet, proso millet and barnyard millet, alongside other dryland crops. Researchers demonstrated quality seed systems, good agronomic practices and climate-smart technologies designed to improve productivity, strengthen resilience to erratic weather and enhance food security for farming communities.

The award also reflects ICRISAT's long-standing collaboration with the Makueni County Government in promoting drought-tolerant crops, farmer training and diversified food systems. County leaders highlighted the institute's role in helping farmers increase yields, improve household nutrition and create new income opportunities despite recurring droughts and climate change.
