A national-level programme focusing on millet research and sustainable agriculture was recently initiated at the University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, through a collaborative effort involving leading agricultural research institutions. The event brought together scientists, policymakers, researchers, and agricultural experts to discuss innovative approaches for strengthening millet cultivation and promoting climate-resilient farming practices.

The discussions emphasized the growing significance of millets in ensuring food and nutritional security while addressing challenges related to climate change, water scarcity, and sustainable resource management. Experts highlighted the need for advanced research in crop improvement, efficient production technologies, value addition, and modern farming systems to enhance the productivity and commercial potential of millet crops.

Participants also explored opportunities for expanding millet-based industries, food processing units, startups, and farmer-centered enterprises to improve rural livelihoods and strengthen agricultural markets. Special attention was given to the role of scientific innovation, technology integration, and institutional collaboration in supporting long-term agricultural sustainability.

The programme included technical sessions on recent developments in pearl millet, sorghum, and small millet research, along with discussions on future strategies for increasing farmer participation and market accessibility. Researchers stressed the importance of developing resilient crop varieties and promoting sustainable agricultural practices to meet future food demands.

The event reflects the increasing national and global focus on millets as nutritious, climate-adaptive crops capable of supporting environmentally sustainable agriculture and rural economic development.
