Tura, Meghalaya | 30 August 2026:

The Department of Food Science and Nutrition, College of Community Science, Central Agricultural University, Imphal, celebrated World Millets Day at Tura, Meghalaya, with a special focus on creating awareness among students about the nutritional importance, health benefits, processing, utilisation and sustainable potential of millets.

The programme was organised as part of the wider World Millets Day – 30 August observance, following the call to the millet community by MBF Universe and Millets International Media Portal to conduct meaningful millet-related activities and spread awareness about healthier and sustainable food choices.

As part of the programme, Dr. Yoya Luithui, Assistant Professor, Department of Food Science and Nutrition, delivered a lecture on “Millet Nutrition and Utilization.” She explained the nutritional significance of millets, processing techniques that can improve the quality and utilisation of millet-based foods, and their potential for developing value-added products.

Students were also given practical exposure through an exhibition of different varieties of millets, enabling them to observe, identify and better understand millet diversity and their potential inclusion in everyday diets.

Dr. Namita Singh, Dean In-charge and Head, Department of Food Science and Nutrition, emphasised the importance of promoting millet consumption for better health, food security and sustainable food systems.

The programme successfully created awareness among students about the nutritional, functional and culinary importance of millets and their growing relevance in building healthier and more sustainable diets.

The event was coordinated by Dr. Yoya Luithui, Assistant Professor, Department of Food Science and Nutrition.
