Kollam, Kerala | 30 August:

Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Kollam celebrated World Millets Day at Millet Cafe, Polayathode, Kollam, with a focus on the nutritional, ecological and economic importance of millets. The programme was inaugurated by Dr. Renjan B, Associate Professor and Head, KVK Kollam.

The celebration was organised as part of the wider observance of World Millets Day on 30 August, following the call given by the Millets International Media Portal to millet institutions, organisations, farmers, entrepreneurs and communities to conduct meaningful activities around millets, nutrition and sustainability.

The programme highlighted the role of millets as nutrient-rich foods and as an important part of sustainable agriculture. Discussions focused on the naturally gluten-free nature of millets, their low glycemic index and their relevance in improving dietary quality.

Smt. Aswathy, a millet entrepreneur, addressed the participants and spoke about the growing importance of millets in the modern health landscape. She also highlighted the value of incorporating high-fibre, nutrient-dense millets into everyday diets.

The programme also showcased a range of value-added millet products, including ready-to-cook mixes, traditional preparations and nutritious baked products. The demonstrations highlighted the practical use, innovation and market potential of millets for both consumers and local entrepreneurs.

Through the initiative, KVK Kollam reinforced the importance of millets in community health, food diversity and agricultural sustainability, while also creating greater public awareness around their everyday use.

The event at Millet Cafe, Kollam adds to the growing number of grassroots and institutional activities being organised in response to the World Millets Day call by Millets International Media Portal.
