Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi, operating under Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J), is strengthening efforts to promote millet cultivation and processing among farmers in the district. The initiative aims to improve farm incomes while encouraging sustainable agricultural practices.

According to KVK scientists, Reasi has favourable conditions for cultivating a range of millet crops, including pearl millet, foxtail millet, finger millet, barnyard millet, kodo millet, and little millet. These crops require fewer inputs and less water, making them well suited to rain-fed and drought-prone regions.

The programme also highlights the nutritional benefits of millets, noting that they are rich in protein, dietary fibre, antioxidants, and essential nutrients. Their gluten-free nature and low glycaemic index make them valuable for healthy diets and lifestyle disease management.

In addition to cultivation, KVK Reasi is encouraging farmers to explore value-added millet products, branding, and marketing opportunities. By expanding millet production and strengthening local value chains, the initiative aims to improve nutritional security, increase farmer incomes, and support climate-resilient agriculture in the region.
