The Government of India has formalised 74,363 micro food processing enterprises under the Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) Scheme as of June 30, 2026. The initiative provides financial assistance, technology upgradation and business support to entrepreneurs, Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) to strengthen India's food processing ecosystem.

A key feature of the programme is its support for millet processing and value addition. Through credit-linked subsidies, common processing infrastructure, branding assistance and marketing support, the scheme is helping build stronger millet value chains. The government is also promoting millet-based products through the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme to encourage innovation and expand domestic as well as export opportunities.

The PMFME Scheme has also approved financial assistance for SHGs and FPOs, established common processing facilities and expanded cold-chain infrastructure, enabling small processors to improve product quality, reduce post-harvest losses and increase the competitiveness of millet-based foods in domestic and international markets.
