Proso millet could gain a larger role in the United States' renewable-fuel economy as policymakers seek federal recognition of the crop as an eligible advanced-biofuel feedstock.

The proposal adds another dimension to the expanding conversation around millets and low-carbon agriculture. Proso millet is already cultivated in parts of the United States, particularly in dryland production systems, but federal recognition within renewable-fuel programmes could potentially create additional demand beyond its established food, feed and birdseed markets.

Supporters of proso millet's inclusion have highlighted several agronomic characteristics that could make the crop relevant to biofuel production. A submission from Dryland Genetics to USDA describes proso millet as having comparatively efficient water use, relatively low nitrogen requirements in some production environments, compatibility with no-till systems and a short growing period of roughly 75–90 days.

Its relatively short production cycle could also provide flexibility within crop rotations and potentially allow integration with other crops in certain agricultural systems. These characteristics have contributed to interest in proso millet as a possible low-carbon biofuel feedstock.

Federal agencies have already encountered requests for millet to receive greater recognition in renewable-fuel policy.

In USDA's 2026 final rule covering technical guidelines for regenerative agricultural biofuel feedstocks, the department confirmed that commenters specifically requested the inclusion of millet, notably proso millet.

USDA said it considered adding millet but was unable to incorporate it because of time and resource constraints as well as limited current production acreage. Importantly, USDA said millet could be considered in the future.

The regulatory discussion also extends to specific millet-derived components. Previous industry submissions concerning sustainable aviation fuel pathways have identified proso millet starch and proso millet kernel fibre among potential feedstocks for consideration.

More recently, renewable-fuel industry representatives have continued calling for federal modelling frameworks to include proso millet alongside additional sorghum-derived feedstocks.

For millet producers, federal recognition would not automatically guarantee higher prices, increased acreage or new biofuel facilities. Those outcomes would depend on subsequent regulatory implementation, lifecycle greenhouse-gas calculations, processing economics, infrastructure and actual commercial demand.

Nevertheless, the policy initiative demonstrates growing interest in proso millet as an industrial and renewable-energy feedstock, extending the crop's potential applications beyond conventional agricultural markets.

For the broader millet industry, this development is significant because it places millet within discussions surrounding biofuels, carbon intensity, renewable energy and climate-resilient agriculture—areas traditionally dominated by larger commodity crops.
